History of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma

The city's name, Broken Arrow, originates from an old Creek community in Alabama. When they moved to Oklahoma, a new community was started and named after the original settlement in Alabama. Rekackv, was the name of the creek and it means broken arrow. However, this settlement is located miles away from the present day Broken Arrow downtown. Several decades later, the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway company constructed a railway that runs through the center of the city and it still exists today. The Union Pacific uses the railway for the transportation of freight. Agriculture was the main industry in the first decades of the city. In the 1900s Broken Arrow did not grow much. However, in the 1960s when the construction of the Broken Arrow Expressway was completed, the city experienced massive urban growth. This expressway was connected to Tulsa's downtown and was one of the triggers to the population growth. Currently, economic developments are a major focus for the city leaders.
